Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to India marks a significant milestone in the enduring partnership between the two nations. As he stepped off the plane in New Delhi, the air was thick with anticipation - a testament to the weight his visit carries in shaping global geopolitics. Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave him a warm welcome at the airport, breaking protocol with a bear hug and handshake, and they shared a car ride from the airport, showcasing their strong bond.
Putin's arrival, his first in four years, signals a renewed push to solidify India-Russia ties amidst a rapidly shifting global landscape. The two leaders had a private dinner at PM Modi's official residence, Lok Kalyan Marg, to discuss strengthening India-Russia ties. Today, Putin will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, followed by summit talks with PM Modi at Hyderabad House.
During their meeting, Modi and Putin addressed each other as "my friend". Putin emphasized that the India-Russia partnership is not aimed against any third country, including the United States. He also commented on US President Donald Trump's tariff policies, stating that Trump pursues his own policy and has advisors who believe such policies benefit the US economy.
The visit underscores India's strategic autonomy as it navigates relationships with Russia, the US, and Europe. Defence remains a cornerstone, with India eyeing additional S-400 missile systems and Su-57 fighter jets to fortify its military prowess. Energy security is another priority, with talks on long-term oil and gas contracts and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) taking center stage.
As talks unfold, the India-Russia partnership is poised to gain momentum. With a focus on expanding trade to $100 billion by 2030, both nations are exploring new avenues for cooperation. India's pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and agricultural goods are likely to find a receptive market in Russia, while Moscow's expertise in energy and defence could bolster India's infrastructure and security.
Putin's India sojourn is a testament to the enduring strength of their relationship, one that continues to shape the contours of Eurasia and beyond. The visit also highlights India's deft diplomatic balancing act, as it navigates complex global dynamics while reinforcing its ties with Russia.
